The Evolution of the leather jacket

For as long as I can remember, the leather jacket has been a symbol of Strength..."Tough Chic" if you will. We long for the drop in temperature to pull the long adored  Fashion  staple  out  of  our  closets.

When it comes to leather jackets, the most common color that comes to mind is Black; a black leather jacket exudes the essence of it's sense of strength which the Staple embodies. 

Studded and Crystallized are some of the embellishments which have come to adorn it. Belted and Textured have been some of the updates and experiments in the efforts to create new and interesting styles from the iconic staple. Recently though, there's been a surge in color boldness making for an interesting Fresh and Updated look. 

For example, I recently noticed Kelly Saks from kellysklosetblog rocking a luscious blue jewel tone Just Cavalli jacket at the Fontainebleau in Miami. And I gotta say, that Blue is a  breath  of  fresh  air.

So  I  went  hunting  for  other  interesting  colors  giving  new  life  to  our  treasured  leather  jacket.

Aside from an array of rainbow colors there's a wide selection of muted earth tones which are actually quite versatile and stylish.

Not to mention the metallics rocking the runway just in time for Sparkle season. 

What I love about these trends are not just the colors...but the feeling. 

It's giving our "tough" leather jacket a sense of refinement; not by how you layer it or dress it up, but on it's own. Allowing it to be Soft, Elegant and Stylish in it's own right.

What's more exciting is seeing it's Evolution right before our eyes! 

 The best way I can describe this evolution is...Edgy. A boldness in the design aesthetics which makes it feel like they're made to Inspire and Withstand social change and herd us into a New Era. What I see here is the fusing of different textiles and designs to create a  Philosophy of appreciation of modern technology and it's usability, and an Awe for the possibilities of said technology which is advancing at an elevated speed. 

So what does this evolution of our beloved leather jacket look like you might ask.

As you can probably tell, when it comes to futuristic leather jacket designs i'm quite partial of Gareth Pugh. But I look forward to seeing what our talented designers old and new will come up with and what is to become of our beloved closet staple in ten...twenty...fifty years down the road. 

We will always have our trusty "tough chic" moto jacket, I doubt it's going silently into the night, it's like comfort food...trusty and familiar. But I do hope you see it for what it is...leather...fabric...something to be molded into endless possibilities. I hope next time you see a leather jacket you see it with New eyes. And next time you go shopping for one, that you'll be bold enough to experiment with color and design and opt for a more updated look...and hang it proudly next to your trusty black moto jacket.
